Lives of the Saints by Mícheál McCann
The Gallery Press
As in his rapturously received first collection, Devotion, in which Mícheál McCann took a classic Irish elegy and applied it to contemporary Belfast so, in Lives of the Saints, he takes biographical details of religious figures and situates them in current states of experience and feeling. Centrepieces of this eclectic collection are an ode to a recycling centre and 'The Impossible Request' in which the author's grandmother forgets that he has told her that he is gay ('I know, pet. I know.') and asks if he has any girlfriends yet. Lives of the Saints is not like other books of poems.
