The Posthumous Book of Shahrazad by Raquel F. Menéndez, translated by Robin Mundy
Skein Press
The first English translation of this award-winning collection is deeply rooted in the culture and community of rural western Asturias, exploring themes of memory, landscape and sisterhood. The poet is in dialogue with three women: her mother, her great-grandmother, and Shahrazad, the storyteller of The Thousand and One Nights. The comparison between her great-grandmother, who lost her ability to speak due to Alzheimer's, and Shahrazad, who avoided certain death by telling stories, is central to the collection's engagement with memory and cultural inheritance. At the heart of this book is the poet's attempt to repeat Shahrazad's trick, to keep her great-grandmother alive through poetry and, by extension, her own connection to the land and landscape in which generations of women in her family lived and worked.
