Still Here by Elin ap Hywel, trans. Laura Fisk
Broken Sleep Books
Published 31st October 2025.
Elin ap Hywel’s Still Here, translated by Laura Fisk, is a resonant and formally diverse collection that weaves together myth, memory, politics, and personal reflection across shifting poetic registers. Drawing from Welsh history and folklore, ap Hywel’s writing moves from lyrical meditations on landscape and loss to sharply observed, quietly subversive commentaries on gender, identity, and domestic ritual. The poems often blur the line between past and present, the real and the imagined, building an accumulative poetics of endurance and presence. Fisk’s translation captures the clarity and nuance of the original, rendering the work with both fidelity and subtle inventiveness. Elin ap Hywel unfortunately has early onset dementia now, and is in a care home, her works and poetry are managed by Menna Elfyn.
