God-Head-Contraption by Emma McKervey
Turas Press
In 'God-Head-Contraption', Emma turns her poetic vision towards the London branch of her family, which included bell-founders, the highly skilled artisans who cast and tune bells. This collection of wayward, anarchic, genre-bending poems imagines the life of her ancestors who were employed by the iconic Bell Foundry of Whitechapel, London. Centre around the ubiquitous person of Mr Oliver, who departs from the North Downs to make his way on foot to London, where he encounters archetypal figures who embody the spirit of the bell “ the God-Head-Contraption “ he receives the call to found the dynasty that will smelt the iron that will echo to the glory of saints and people. Daring, witty, occasionally slipping into the creation myth of the mediaeval mystery play, God-Head-Contraption is an exuberant homage to the trade of the poet's ancestors, and to the contribution of the hands of working people to the spirit of art and creation.
