THE NEW YOUNG PEOPLE'S LAUREATE FOR LONDON
We're delighted to hear that rising star Theresa Lola has been announced as Spread the Word's new Young People’s Laureate for London. Theresa was recently published by Nine Arches Press and performed at the Inpress Festival of Publishing dinner in January. She is a British Nigerian poet and joint winner of the 2018 Brunel International African Poetry Prize. In April 2018 she was invited by the Mayor of London to perform a commissioned poem at the unveiling of Millicent Fawcett’s statue at Parliament Square. Her debut collection In Search of Equilibrium (Nine Arches Press, 2019) is ‘a glorious hymn to being alive and wounded.’ On being appointed Laureate Theresa claimed: “I hope to use this role to encourage young people to creatively engage in conversations about our well-being and mental health, to celebrate what self-care means to us and the things that give us hope as young Londoners... In times of crisis, poetry is a healthy outlet that young people can use to voice their feelings.”
