In these fine, elegiac poems loved ones are brought startlingly to life. There is humour here, too, as well as poems which evoke childhood. I particularly loved ‘Bless You’ in which the speaker inherits a shirt he can’t fill, brogues worn by his father’s feet and handkerchieves with the wrong initial in the corner. I also admired ’ante natal’ in which a life is skilfully run backwards and the very poignant ‘Rope Bridge’. One poem make reference to WS Graham and Graham’s influence can be seen in other the poems in this very assured and moving first collection.
