Moving between Gulf high-rises, war-broken cities, Spanish beaches, Delhi art fairs and Anglican funerals, Mark Fiddes maps how oil money, tourism and empire seep into every room, every body, every view from the window. Fiddes is wickedly funny and deadly serious at once. Crayfish devour cities in the name of rights, a tank falls in love with a village, nude cyclists stall at Sloane Square, and poets queue uselessly on a doomed flight. Climate catastrophe, colonial hangovers and endless small wars sit beside family tenderness, hospital waiting rooms and the courage to say 'I love you' first. O'Rourke casts an unflinching eye over the devastations of recent history, even as he celebrates the capacities and solaces of the poetic vocation itself. The result is a humane and radically engaged mode of eco-poetic thinking, attuned to the systems of power that dominate our world, as well as the manifold forms of resistance and response of which human beings are capable. Imaginatively resurrecting the voices of a number of exemplary historical figures ' from Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) and Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) to Rosa Luxemburg (1871-1919) and Kathleen Lynn (1874-1955) ' Prophetstown combines a creatively galvanizing understanding of past struggles for emancipation and equality with a discerning, clear-sighted perception of present- day social concerns. It reaches back into the deep geological past and forward into a troubled future of pollution and extinction, via the boom and bust of the nineteenth-century fishing industry. At that time, government advisors recommended against regulating fishing in the Forth estuary, despite the wishes of fishermen who feared the fish population would be decimated without restrictions on trawling. Within a few decades the teeming waters of the Forth were denuded and the local fishing industry collapsed. The poems at the centre of Firth follow this ecological parable as it unfolds, although the story of the Forth told here covers a vaster timescale. Firth is a formally restless collection, moving from haiku and prose poem sequences to ambitious long works on glaciers and oysters. Human and non-human perspectives intermingle in poems characterised by a wide-ranging vocabulary and metaphysical depth. While politically urgent, MacKenzie's poems rarely preach but rather interrogate the conflicting ways in which we engage with the world around us. In this portrait of the Forth there is beauty as well as devastation; a search for meaning in a shoreline of microplastics and bird flu. The poetry is anchored in one locality but resolutely resistant to parochialism: the problems of the Forth are the problems of waters the world over. Garry MacKenzie's book-length poem Ben Dorain: a conversation with a mountain, published by The Irish Pages Press in 2021, was shortlisted for a Scottish National Book Award and for the Highland Book Prize. A section of Ben Dorain was included in Kathleen Jamie's landmark anthology Antlers of Water, and the poem has been adapted for BBC Radio 4. He has collaborated with visual artists and filmmakers, and has published three poetry pamphlets with Clutag Press and Wind\u0026amp;Bones. Your fetch 'fetches' you to the afterlife, willingly or otherwise. Bramwell's poetry uses the fetch as a model to explore a number of overlapping binaries - between the reader and the poem, most of all. Fetch also meditates on the differences between music and speech, the sacred and the profane, the written and the real, humanity and nature, Scots and English. Incorporating multitudes of modes, forms, registers and subjects, Bramwell converses with the Anglo-Celtic lyric tradition in our own time and in his own distinctively amiable fashion. In other words, this poet takes poetry seriously - but not too seriously. Fetch is an astonishingly musical tour-de-force from one of Britain's most exciting new poets, in which reverence and irreverence, religion and faithlessness, the living and the dead, nearly rhyme. After decades working in the city, a man returns to his childhood home to care for his parents and their small farm. When they die, grief, rural isolation, and mounting tensions with neighbours lead to his slow unravelling: a threatening haiku posted on a shed wall, the adoption of two dogs, and the growing belief that one dog is the reincarnation of his father. Structured in three sections echoing the three lines of a haiku, the book moves from the man's troubled homecoming to the aftermath of the killings, and finally to the fugitive's hallucinatory experience hiding in the forest awaiting capture.
